The Friends' Summer

We all thoroughly enjoyed our Day at the Beach this term, when the school was transformed into a magical seaside for this year’s summer fair… beach balls, umbrellas, beach huts, a seaside sweet shop, a beach bar, fish & chips, Punch & Judy and even real beach sand all contributed to a day to remember.

Well done to all the boys who took part in the tennis and chess tournaments through the term, the finals of which were hotly contested at the summer fair; and to the gymnasts and choir who performed so beautifully. A huge thank you must go to the committee, class reps, and parents who all put so much effort in making the day so fantastic!

2013-14 has been a fun, exciting year for the FoS committee. We have all greatly enjoyed the main events of the year - the Quiz Night, Christmas Fair, Great Gatsby Ball and our Day at the Beach. These events have been great fun to organise and have raised significant funds for the school and our chosen charities. £5,700 has been donated to Winston’s Wish, and £500 to Homes for New Hope - NAG Nepal. We have raised £25,000 for the school this year, which has been used to buy a new piano, teaching materials for the outdoor classrooms, new WCPS gazebos for sports events; to fund an author visit and artist-in-residence week; and provided a camera to record sports and other events. Our big project for this year is the redevelopment of the Orchard Garden, the first phase of which will be completed over the summer. We hope that you will join us in the autumn term for our inaugural digging day!

Looking ahead to the 2014-2015 school year, Friends of Squirrels will be fundraising for further development of the Orchard Garden and additions to the library. We will be supporting the Royal Marsden Hospital, a charity nominated picked by a WCPS boy who has been receiving treatment there. We look forward to the return of some of our favourite events next term. Do save the date for the AGM and Quiz Night on Friday 3rd October.

As we come to the end of the school year, we sadly say goodbye, and thank you very much, to our wonderful, dedicated committee members Celine Ebbans, Kathy Evans, Vivian Ogbunude, Philippa Rivaldi and Simone Saunders. We wish you and your boys all the best at your new schools. FoS rely on the tireless efforts of the parents who arrange and the fundraising events, so we would love to hear from you if you are passionate about the school and would like to be involved, and have fun organising next year’s events.

We do hope that you have enjoyed the 2013-2014 school year as much as we have and we wish you all a very good summer. We look forward to seeing you all in September.
