The Corporation of King’s College School is pleased to announce that Lord Deighton will succeed Mrs Penny Hughes as chairman of governors from 31st August 2017.

Mrs Hughes has been Chairman since January 2013 and has made an outstanding contribution to King’s; she has ably led the governing body, in partnership with Andrew Halls and Gerard Silverlock, spearheading a number of successful developments in the school. These include re-introducing A-levels alongside the International Baccalaureate in the sixth form, the investment in infrastructure with a £50m facilities improvement plan, the introduction of an 11+ entry into the senior school and an international partnership in China. Mrs Hughes said, “It has been a privilege to lead the governing body and to work with many talented and dedicated governors. I also want to pay tribute to the leadership of Andrew Halls and Gerard Silverlock as well as to the abilities and hard work of all the staff.” The Corporation thanks Mrs Hughes for her commitment, time and energy and for the important legacy she leaves at King’s.

Lord Deighton has had an outstanding career first in banking, then as Chief Executive of the Organising Committee for the London Olympics, followed by ministerial roles in government. His two sons were King's pupils and he retains a genuine fondness for all that King's stands for. Lord Deighton said, “King’s is one of the leading schools in the world and I am delighted to be taking over the chairmanship of the governing body after Penny Hughes’ excellent tenure. I am looking forward to working with governors, the Heads, the staff, the wider school community and other supporters as it continues to build on its academic successes, its excellent reputation for pastoral care, its continuing programme of facility enhancement and its public benefit work. “
